American Roots Migration Project

Learning from people with rural roots

Why do people who grow up in rural places stay, leave, or return?
Why do people choose to move to rural states?

Geographers at the University of Vermont, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and University of New Mexico have teamed up to ask rural Americans the factors that influenced where they choose to live as adults. In 2025 we are running the American Roots Migration Study in South Dakota, Vermont, and New Mexico. If you grew up in or moved to one of these places, please consider taking the survey for your home state.
